4 M I L P I TA S C HAMB E R O F C OMME R C E Community Overview First inhabited by a subgroup of the Muwekma Ohlone people who had resided in the San Francisco Bay Area for thousands of years, Milpitas found itself as a crossing point for Spanish expeditions of the late 18th century, trading between missions in what is today Fremont and Santa Clara. Modern-day Milpitas was divided between three giant land grants among prominent Spanish descendants in the mid-1800s. Around 1850, families of European descent began to inhabit the area, mainly operating dairies and farms, while also spurring small businesses along present day Main Street. A second wave came around 1870, when many immigrants from the Azores Islands in Portugal began to toil on orchards and dairies in the fertile valley. Enough growth and business was occurring by the mid-1950s that the city’s young leaders decided they should incorporate. Thus in January 1954, City of Milpitas was born, with 825 residents. Milpitas leaders vehemently fought annexation attempts by San Jose in 1961 and remained independent. By the 1980s, Milpitas continued to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, and shifted focus to silicon chip and computer production. Today’s Milpitas is one of the world’s premiere producers of high-tech equipment and components. Tenants of the burgeoning city of nearly 92,172 are family-centered communities that embrace cultural diversity, comprehensive schooling and preservation of the hillsides. As the “Gateway to Silicon Valley,” Milpitas is known throughout the Bay Area for its vibrant restaurants, shopping destinations, new housing stock and as a key employment center. Several hotels at Highway 237 and I-880 are within walking distance of light rail. The much-anticipated 10-mile Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Berryessa Extension opened on June 13, 2020. This brings BART service to Milpitas, connecting with Fremont, Oakland, San Francisco, Millbrae, Pleasanton, Livermore, Concord and other East Bay locations. The Milpitas BART Station (pictured), a new major transit hub, opened in June 2020. It is located near the Great Mall, providing interconnectivity to VTA light rail and bus service. AC Transit and Altamont Commuter Express transportation options link to VTA service for commuters. Amtrak regional passenger rail service is available in nearby San Jose and Santa Clara, and CalTrain service spans the Peninsula all the way to San Francisco, with multiple stops in the neighboring cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Mountain View. Milpitas residents and business travelers are served by three regional airports: Mineta San Jose International Airport (approximately 9 miles away), Oakland International Airport (approximately 30 miles away) and San Francisco International Airport (approximately 40 miles away).
