8 Las Cruces Home Builders Association

10 Las Cruces Home Builders Association KT HOMES When founded, over 30 years ago, KT Homes committed to building homes that would reflect their passion for quality, efficiency, and serving the customer’s needs. The company believes that their homes should be built with an attention to quality and detail that stand the test of time. The Thurston family has been building communities and homes in Southern New Mexico for over 30 years. As a family owned and operated company now in their second generation, their passion drives them to create homes that compliment people’s lifestyles through thoughtful, energy efficient design, long-lasting construction, and a wide variety of floor plans and options. EDUCATION HOUSE WHY: At the onset of Kent Thurston’s, presidency at the Las Cruces Home Builders Association (LCHBA), he took exception to the fulfillment of the organization’s mission statement. He felt that they were not providing enough educational opportunities, especially for middle school and high school age students. Much of the activity was dedicated to assisting local charities, that genuinely needed help, but weren’t related to home building. Kent’s concern was that so many of the youth today are bombarded by career advice directed at obtaining traditional college degrees that often lead to mounds of debt and grim career opportunities. This was his thought process. He was bothered by the fact that the traditional education system would be of no benefit to some of these kids. If the rhetoric was to get good grades and complete schooling so that you could get a good job and get money, well, there is another way! The fact of the matter is that many of the folks in our community that exchanged college for a trade program are more prosperous than the faculty that advocated for a degree only option. Both are good options and some people fit into one and others into another. Kent wanted to make sure the choice existed. As he presented the idea to the board of the LCHBA, the decision was unanimous to take action and execute a plan to provide an opportunity for kids to participate and learn the skill of homebuilding. The Education House project was born. WHO: At this juncture an effort was made to organize committees and individuals that could help turn this concept into a reality. Nicole Black, EDUCATION HOUSE KT HOMES EDUCATION HOUSE

2022 Showcase of Homes 11 Executive Officer of the LCHBA was quick to carry the torch that had been lit and innovate on the renewed objective of the organization. She spearheaded a like-minded program called Build My Future. In its first year it hosted over 200 students and allowed many local contractors and suppliers the opportunity to showcase their craft, materials, and tools used in building a home. This program has taken on a life of its own and lends itself into stirring up interest in the true meaning of the LCHBA’s mission and the Education House. The approach for Education House was devised from a similar program that had been run by Kent’s uncle at a school in Utah. Ben Beard was also very active and influential in the planning stages of the program, having participated in a similar curriculum during his school days. Jim Schapekahm, Principal of Organ Mountain High School took notice of the program and helped stir some interest in its realization. Together this group of individuals hefted the monumental effort of presenting and promoting Education House. HOW: Three years later the Education House was approved and accepted by the Board of Education. Three LONG years. All credit goes to Organ Mountain High School Principal, Jim Schapekahm, for cutting through the red tape. To paraphrase Jim, “Here’s a Home Builders Association that is willing to fund this opportunity for us. I’m going to set aside money from my own budget and make sure that you have a teacher and a shop room and we are going to work hand-in-hand to make this happen.” It was Jim that was able to break through the obstacles impeding the Education House program and make it a reality. The first student participants of Education House are currently in the process of building a 2,100 sq ft home alongside local contractors. They’ve been engaged by bankers, home builders, and every trade involved in the home building process. Many have donated their time, talents, and funding to give these students the opportunity to explore home building in a very unique and personal way. The goal of the Education House project is to perpetually fund the program through the sale of the home. The hope is that more schools will participate in the program and allow their students to experience home building from inception through completion. We are happy to report that the first Education House project home is already sold. The Education House is on the Showcase of Homes tour both weekends. Stop by and learn more about the program with Organ Mountain HS and on Friday, May 13th from 4-7 pm stop by to meet the high school students in person that helped build this home from the ground up.
