2022 | CHANDLER BUSINESS & RELOCATION GUIDE 6 According to the Chandler Arizonan, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce was founded in April of 1912, just before the City of Chandler was incorporated. In the absence of a city government (before incorporation), the Chandler Chamber of Commerce operated like a quasigovernment entity, helping the community get roads, flood control, cotton pickers, fire protection, a better lit downtown and other improvements. It also advocated for businesses, promoted and hosted discussions on incorporation and got involved in regional issues including flood control, better streets and tourism promotion. If Dr. A.J. Chandler was the father of Chandler, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce was truly its mother, advocating for business and community. Over one hundred years later, the Chandler Chamber is stronger than ever, educating, advocating for and growing Chandler businesses. While you can have a strong community and a vibrant business sector, it’s when these two entities work together that creates a unique live, work and play climate — it’s what makes the Chandler Chamber special. The Chandler Chamber’s Community Foundation and Leadership Institute Program is another example of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce’s desire for innovation and modern leadership. Each year, Chandler Leadership Institute team members plan, participate and execute service projects in our community. These projects range from a building make-over to the design and implementation of a local snack-shack. Through this program the Chamber helps to develop strong leaders that in turn, have been able to give back to the community in a positive way by serving on various boards & participating in other leadership capacities. Partnering with business mentoring programs such as SCORE and the SBDC, the Chandler Chamber coaches over 1,000 businesses and entrepreneurs a year helping businesses with everything from business plans to marketing to permitting and expansion. CHANDLERCHAMBER.COM 17 For over 30 years ostriches have been celebrated in Chandler; they are featured all over the city be it as stuffed animals, colorful statues or stylish T-shirts. It is all because of the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival. The festival began in 1988 based on Chandler’s colorful early history of ostrich ranching. In 1914, there were 6,000 ostriches in the metro Phoenix area — 80 percent of the U.S. total, according to the Chandler Museum. In 1988 to celebrate the city’s ties with the big bird, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce created the Ostrich Festival. “It began when the chamber board was trying to come up with an event that would be special to Chandler, and ostriches filled the bill,” said Chandler Chamber President/CEO, Terri Kimble, “So in essence, the festival really honors Dr. Chandler, the founder of Chandler as he owned one the largest ostrich ranches in the Valley.” The event has become one of the premier festivals in the southwest attracting close to 100,000 attendees over multiple days of pure fun! Today, the Ostrich Festival is a family-friendly experience that has drawn national and regional entertainment making it just as much a music festival as carnival atmosphere. Not to be missed are the exhilarating midway rides, fabulous food, and upscale arts & crafts. The festival has won four Zonie Awards for the production of the event. For more information on the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival, visit  The flightless ostrich is the world’s largest bird.  The ostrich’s eyes are about the size of billiard balls. They take up so much room in the skull that the ostrich’s brain is actually smaller than either one of its eyeballs. This may be why the ostrich, despite its tremendous running speed, is not very good at eluding predators: it tends to run in circles.  Ostriches are the fast runners of any birds or other two-legged animal and can sprint at over 70km/hr, covering up to 5m in a single stride.  Lacking teeth, ostriches swallow pebbles to grind their food. An adult ostrich carries about 1kg of stones at any one time as they have 3 stomachs and can go without water for several days.  Ostriches are not an endangered species; there are at least 2 million worldwide.  When fully grown an ostrich has one of the most advanced immune systems known to mankind.  Ostriches do not bury their head in the sand.  Ostriches are an extremely resourceful species and are recognized as one of the only environmentally friendly animals in the world.  When the eggs hatch after 35 to 45 days incubation, the male usually defends the hatchlings and teaches them to feed, although males and females cooperate in rearing chicks. 1 VISIT US ONLINE AT CHANDLERCHAMBER.COM
